Linda Lumsden

Lumsden retired as a professor in May 2021. Her latest book, Social Justice Journalism: A Cultural History of Social Movement Media from Abolition to #womensmarch, was published by Peter Lang Ltd. in summer 2019. Her historiography in American Journalism's Special Issue: Woman Suffrage and the Media (April 2019) was condensed into a chapter of a bookpublished by University of Illinois Press in 2020 to commemorate the Nineteenth Amendment centennial. Also author of Black, White, and Red All Over: A Cultural History of the Radical Press in Its Heyday, 1900-1917 (Kent State, 2014), she has written about numerous forms of social movement media, including the suffrage press, black press, feminist press, and socialist press as well as Occupy movement media and online “contentious journalism” in Malaysia, where she spent 2012-13 as a J. William Fulbright Core Scholar. She teaches courses in journalism history, social justice journalism, journalism ethics, and journalism, gender, and race.  She was the school's director of graduate studies for 2018-19.
