Dual M.A./M.P.A. Journalism/Public Administration

You can earn a Master of Arts degree in Journalism (M.A.) and a Master of Public Administration (M.P. A.) in three years, including two summer internships. 

Course Requirements

You must complete a minimum of 60 units to earn dual master’s degrees in Journalism and Public Administration. You may choose from the following academic tracks:

General Track

Journalism Courses (15 units) 

  • JOUR 506: Introductory and Advanced Reporting (3 units)
  • JOUR 507: Reporting with Multimedia (3 units)
  • JOUR 508: Journalism Theory and Practice (3 units)
  • JOUR 509: International and U.S. Media Law (3 units)
  • JOUR 547: Government Secrecy (3 units)

Shared Journalism/Public Administration Courses (15 units)

  • JOUR 505: Media Apprenticeship (3 units; requires an interview at the internship fair)
  • JOUR 520: Digital Communication Law (3 units)
  • JOUR 539: Ethics and the News Media (3 units)
  • JOUR 590C, JOUR 590F, or JOUR 597D: School Media (3 units; choose 1) 
  • JOUR 909: Project or JOUR 910: Thesis (3 units)

Public Administration Courses (24 credits)

  • PA 500: Economics for Public Policy (3 units)
  • ​PA 501: Public Organizational Theory (3 units)
  • PA 503: Politics, Policy & Public Management (3 units)
  • PA 505: Methods for Program Evaluation (3 units)
