Bechman, other alums capture 2017 ANA awards

Alums, students and adjunct faculty from the UA School of Journalism captured 13 individual first-place awards from the Arizona Newspaper Association on Saturday.

In addition, Alexis Bechman ('08) of the Payson Roundup was chosen as Journalist of the Year in the non-daily division and won her fourth Freedom of Information award from ANA and the Arizona Associated Press Managing Editors; and Caitlin Schmidt ('14) and adjunct instructor Joe Ferguson ('06), both of the Arizona Daily Star, won their second and third Freedom of Information awards, respectively.

Multiple first-place winners were master's grads Kendal Blust ('16) of the Nogales International (feature story, feature photo, sports story) and Glenn Gullickson ('86) of the West Valley View (investigative reporting, sustained coverage); and Dan Shearer ('85) of the Green Valley News (feature story, column writing). Other winners were Tanner Clinch ('15) of the Eloy Enterprise and student J.D. Molinary of the Arizona Daily Wildcat, each in the best news category; Bechman in investigative reporting, and adjunct instructors Jim Nintzel of the Tucson Weekly for enterprise reporting and Mike Christy ('11) for best photo.

In newspaper awards, the Arizona Daily Wildcat, under adviser Brett Fera ('05), took first places in general excellence, page design and special section; and the Arizona Daily Star, under editor Jill Jorden Spitz ('88), took first places in page design, community service and special section, and two individual staff first-place awards for best series and multimedia storytelling for its border project, "Beyond the Wall."

Student David Del Grande placed third in best feature story.
