Sophomore Erik Kolsrud won the Mark Finley Gold Pen Award after vying with 11 other 205 students in the fall 2015 best beginning newswriting contest Dec. 3 at the UA School of Journalism.

Sophomore Brit Reid took second and senior Jordyn Owen was third. Kolsrud captured $1,000, while Reid and Owen won $750 and $500, respectively.

Students had one hour to write and polish a story after interviewing City Councilman Steve Kozachik during a news conference setting. Professor Susan Knight and adjunct instructor Sarah Garrecht Gassen judged the competition.

The contest is named for the late Mark Finley, a UA grad who was a journalist and assistant for the publisher of Hearst's Boston newspaper for 17 years.
