Junior John Ricker won the Mark Finley Gold Pen Award in the school's Fall 2016 best beginning news writing contest on Nov. 10.
Junior Elise McClain took second place and sophomore Jordan Williams finished third after students in JOUR 205 participated in the contest. Ricker won $1,000 in scholarship money, followed by McClain ($750) and Williams ($500).
Students had an hour to write a story after a talk and interview session with Steve Kozachik, who represents Ward 6 on the Tucson City Council. Kozachik spoke about the fight between legislators and the city over gun ordinances.
Professors Maggy Zanger, Carol Schwalbe and Linda Lumsden judged the competition.
The contest is named for the late Mark Finley, a UA grad who was a journalist and assistant to the publisher of Hearst's Boston newspaper for 17 years.
