Alan Weisman

Laureate Professor Emeritus

Alan Weisman has reported for magazines and radio from more than 60 countries and all seven continents. His most recent book is Hope Dies Last, published in 2025 by Dutton/Penguin Random House. His last book, Countdown, won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. His international bestseller The World Without Us, now in 35 languages, was named Best Nonfiction Book of 2007 by Time Magazine and Entertainment Weekly, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, winner of the National Library of China’s Wenjin Book Prize, and one of the 50 Best Nonfiction Books of the Past 25 Years by Slate in 2019.

From 2003-2013, he led international field classes for the School of Journalism in Latin America. He now lives in western Massachusetts with his wife, sculptor Beckie Kravetz.
