El Inde is a magazine reported, written, designed and produced by students at the University of Arizona School of Journalism. The theme and scope of El Inde changes from semester to semester and includes a wide variety of storytelling formats and approaches.
History of the Publication
Professor Emerita Jacqueline Sharkey, former director of the school, created the bilingual newspaper El Independiente in 1976. Ahead of its time nationally for covering underserved, minority communities, the paper focused on presenting in-depth public-affairs and investigative reporting on political, economic and social issues affecting South Tucson.
"For many years the newspaper was the only bilingual publication in the country produced on a regular basis by students to serve a real community," Sharkey said. "Staffers went on to work for major news organizations around the country, and won awards for their investigative work."
The publication continues to provide students with experience covering multicultural communities, and is a reflection of the school's longstanding commitment to diversity. Stories in the past have appeared in English and Spanish.
Students have moved beyond South Tucson to tackle issues affecting southern Arizonans living along the U.S.-Mexico border. In spring 2012, the publication moved from a newspaper to a magazine format and shortened the name to El Inde in late 2019.
