This post marks the end of my internship with ABC Sports Los Angeles (KABC), now dubbed the best summer of my life. It is almost impossible to answer the question of “What I Did This Summer" due to the challenge of trying to sum up three months’ worth of incredible experiences in only a few short paragraphs.
Coming into the KABC position fresh off of a semester abroad, I had no idea of the breadth of experiences I would have, nor the exposure I would gain. I knew this was a coveted internship, but I wasn't entirely sure why. After completing it, however, I now know why it is described as one of the most competitive internships in the country. KABC runs the internship program, literally as the saying goes “sink or swim.”
On my first day, they threw me into the field, armed only with a camera guy and very little direction. At Dodger Stadium, I battled against other reporters in the scrum attempting to ask manager Dave Roberts questions, interview various baseball players, and help find appropriate B-roll to fit the newscast for that day and night. That’s why I say "sink or swim"....they sent me out with the hope that I could do the job.
Suffice it to say, I swam; because throughout the remainder of the internship, I was sent on a multitude of field assignments.
I covered the Los Angeles Rams OTA’s, training camp, and pre-season games. I spent time in the Staples center covering the WNBA Los Angeles Sparks' games, as well as obtaining interviews. I attended Los Angeles Lakers summer practices and press conferences.
I covered the red carpet at the ESPY Awards, as well as the premier of HBO's Hard Knocks and various celebrity sports events. I can’t even describe how amazing it was standing in between legends like Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neill and Charles Barkley.
With the fortuitous timing of the Olympics, I also had the privilege of covering the USA Men’s and Women’s exhibition basketball games. And if you are a sports fan, you know how cool it was to meet USA Men’s head coach Coach K (Mike Krzyzewski).
I still can’t believe I got paid for watching and talking sports. This summer was a dream, living in reality.
